Yunnan (Beautiful Clouds in the South) Province is the most southwest region of China bordering the countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Burma. Yunnan Province borders Guizhou Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the east, Chongqing and Sichuan to the north, and Tibet Autonomous Region to the northwest. Yunnan encompasses 394,000 square kilometers and has a population of more than 42 million people.

Within these borders, Yunnan has a diverse topography that ranges from alpine mountain ranges to tropical rainforests and the greatest number of plant species in China (more than 18,000) as well as an incredible array of animals.

Kunming

The Stone Forest: The Stone Forest or Shilin is a notable set of limestone formations located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province

Jiuxiang Cave: Jiuxiang is known as the "museum of karst caves", which boasts its caves as the largest in scale and number and has the most wonderful in-cave scenes in China. The caves in the area are praised for their grandeur, wonder grotesquerie and natural beauty.

Lake Dian: Also known as Kunming lake, Lake Dian is located at the foot of the Western Hills south-west of Kunming city in Yunnan Province. Being a bright and smooth highland lake, it's reputed as "A Pearl on the Yungui Plateau".

Lijiang

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Mountain) is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Consisting of 13 peaks, among which Shanzidou is the highest with an altitude of 5,600 meters. Looking from Lijiang Old Town in the south which is 15 kilometers away, the snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence the name.

The Old Town of Lijiang: Also known as Dayan Town in Lijiangba, the Old Town of Lijiang is an intact ancient city inhabited mostly by Naxi ethnic people and covers an area of 1.5 square kilometers.

Dali

Three Pagoda of Chongsheng Temple: Located 1.5 kilometers northwest of Dali Old Town, the magnificent Chongsheng Temple and the well-known Three Pagodas are the symbol of Dali. If you look at it from a distance, the pagodas are like three giant ballpoint pens breaking up the landscape of the never-ending mountains and emerald rice fields of Yunnan.

Erhai Lake: With a preferable superiority in location, Erhai is the cradle of Dali in politics, economy and culture, and plays a key part in the city’s development in water supply, agricultural irrigation, generation of electricity, climate adjustment, fishery, shipping and tourism.

Dali Old Town: The ancient city of Dali is one of Yunnan's most popular tourist destinations, nearby beautiful Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. The street is popular with both foreigners and Chinese. It is known as a backpackers’ heaven.

Shangrila

Meili Snow Mountain: Known for the grandest view in Yunnan Province, Meili Snow Mountain boasts numerous snow-clad ridges and peaks, thirteen of which exceed 6,000 meters above the sea level. The most splendid view is of the Kawagebo Peak, the highest in Yunnan Province rising about 6,740 meters. It is still a 'virgin peak' for no one has ever reached the top.

Potatso National Park: Potatso National Park is located in the centre of "Three Parallel Rivers" world natural heritage area, belong to northwest of Yunnan Province. It is made up of the Wetlands of International Importance Bita Lake Nature Reserve and the "Three Parallel Rivers" world natural heritage Redhill Area’s Shudu Lake.

Xishuangbanna
